Trampoline Injury Research – Over the Past 13 Years

More than 1 million people went to emergency departments for trampoline-related injuries between 2002 and 2011, with nearly 300,000 of those injuries involving broken bones, according to a new study. And these injuries don’t come cheap — the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics study showed that the total emergency department expenses for them was $1 billion, and more than $400 million for fractures specifically (Huffington Post).
Here is a rough outline of a progression of reputable reports starting in 2006:
2006: An Australian report breaks down the cause of injuries on playground equipment. Trampolines are shown to be the cause of 23% of all reported injuries.
2007: ED visits for trampoline-related injuries in 2000–2005 increased in frequency by 113% over the number of visits for 1990–1995. Trampoline use at home continues to be a significant source of childhood injury morbidity.
2009: New research indicates there has not been a decline in trampoline injuries since the introduction of pads and enclosures on consumer trampolines and they are, therefore not effective.
2012: This new research indicates that the more severe proportion of injuries on traditional trampolines can be significantly reduced with appropriate trampoline design.
